Welcome to my now page. Last updated .
- We just got back from an awesome two-week trip around Asia, visiting Penang, Singapore and Chengdu.
- The Chengdu Panda Base was even more joyful than I'd anticipated. I think I could genuinely stand there and watch a panda munch down bamboo all day.
- I got to play the Apollo Ingress anomaly in Singapore. Attending an overseas anomaly has been a dream for a long time, after going to so many around Australia. We uhh… lost, quite heavily, being outnumbered about 2:1, which ended my perfect win record. But it was an absolute blast to spend the afternoon running around Toa Payoh in the heat and the humidity with the Aussie Enlightened team.
- Malaysian and Sichuan cuisines are some of my favourites, and from the wok hei of my first street-side Char Kway Teow to the numbing burn of my last bite of hot-pot, I was not let down.
- Two food highlights I wasn't already familiar with were the absolute flavour bomb of Nasi Kandar in Penang and the incredible chewy texture of Tian Shui Mian in Chengdu.
- Chengdu might be the least English-friendly large city I've been to, but it really didn't matter. It went so much smoother than our trip to Shanghai in 2019 — that awkward period after society had migrated to the apps (Alipay, WeChat, etc.) for everything, but before they'd opened it to foreigners.
- Among the discourse around Australia's Digital Duty of Care announcement earlier this month, someone online insisted that "you could already do that" (opt-out of algorithms) on YouTube by deleting and disabling history. As a heavy YouTube (Premium) user, I tried it, and it sucked.
- The home page — whether mobile, desktop, or most-hilariously TV — is just a big blank page with a box complaining that "Your watch history is off". If I'm not mistaken, this corpo-speak translates roughly to "Fuck You!" in plain English?
- But then, it kinda stuck. My Subscriptions page is a near-flawless YouTube home page: every video from only my subscribed channels in chronological order. I had to subscribe to a number of channels I'd previously relied on The Algorithm to surface, and then pruned some noisy ones with too-low signal, leaving me with a really good cadence to always have something to watch without missing anything.
- Discoverability isn't the best, but I have no shortage of content across various interests, and search is still there, so it's fine.
- My main gap is decent history content, which The Algorithm used to feed me regularly, but search only surfaces the sloppiest of slop.
- I recommend that any YouTube-using reader of this page tries it out for at least a while.
